Sam Allardyce LEAVES Leeds after failing to prevent Premier League relegation... after crunch talks with the club's hierarchy on Thursday

Sam Allardyce has left Leeds after his last-minute appointment at the end of the season failed to keep the club in the Premier League.

The 68-year-old was expected to depart Elland Road after crunch talks with the club's hierarchy on Thursday.

Allardyce was unable to save Leeds from the drop as he earned just one point from his four games in charge and has departed by 'mutual agreement'.

In a statement, Leeds said his replacement will be announced 'in the coming weeks'.

But the relegation specialist was unable to pull off yet another dramatic escape as Leeds surrendered their Premier League status following a 4-1 defeat to Tottenham on the last day of the season.

Allardyce said: 'It has been an honour to manage Leeds United, a great club with an incredible fan base, who deserve to be in the Premier League.

'I have really enjoyed working with the staff and players at the club and I would like to thank Angus Kinnear for the opportunity. I'd also like to highlight the outstanding work of Karl Robinson and Robbie Keane who have worked tirelessly over the past few weeks.

'At this stage in my career I am not sure taking on this challenge, which is potentially a long-term project, is something I could commit to, but I wish the club every success for the future and hope the club returns to the Premier League, where they belong.'

Leeds claimed their solitary point in an edgy draw against Newcastle, but defeats against Manchester City, West Ham, and Spurs confirmed their drop to the Championship.

The team ended the season having not won in nine matches.

'Leeds United and Sam Allardyce can confirm that both parties have mutually agreed for Sam's spell at the club to end following the completion of the 2022/23 season,' Leeds said in a statement.

'Sam joined the Whites for the final four games of the campaign and despite spirited performances against Manchester City and Newcastle United, the objective of staying in the Premier League was not reached.'

Leeds' CEO Angus Kinnear credited the manager with doing everything he could to 'lift the mood at Thorp Arch and Elland Road', and said the club were 'extremely grateful' for his short spell as manager.

Mail Sport previously reported on how Allardyce was shocked by the players' lack of fight as they scrapped for their survival.

Leeds will look to overhaul their squad in preparation for their return to the Championship this season, and they will likely have to contend with a number of high profile departures too.

Kinnear is set to lead the recruitment of the club's new head coach following the sacking of director of football Victor Orta last month.
